The Lawyer’s Brief
Edition 14, Lesson 14.1: If/Then Logic
Part I: Identifying the Witness (p and q)
For each statement, identify the Hypothesis (p) and the Conclusion (q).
1.
"If a shape is a triangle, then it has three interior angles."
p:
________________________________________________
q:
________________________________________________
2.
"You will be blessed if you listen to the voice of the Lord."
(Hint: Look for the condition first, even if it comes after the result!)
p:
________________________________________________
q:
________________________________________________
3.
"All parallel lines never intersect."
(Rewrite this as an If/Then statement first).
If/Then: ________________________________________________
The Lawyer's First Check:
Did you include the word "If" in your hypothesis? (No!) The hypothesis is the statement inside the If. The word "If" is the gate, not the person walking through it.
Part II: Breaking the False Chain (Counter-Examples)
Each statement below is FALSE. Provide a single Counter-Example to prove it.
4.
"If a number is divisible by 2, then it is divisible by 4."
Counter-Example: ________
5.
"If you live in Koinonia, then you are a master weaver."
Counter-Example: ________
Part III: The Mirror of the Word (Converse, Inverse, Contrapositive)
Original Statement (True): "If it is a square, then it has four equal sides."
6.
The Converse (q → p):
Write it: ________________________________________________
Is it True? ________
7.
The Inverse (~p → ~q):
Write it: ________________________________________________
Is it True? ________
8.
The Contrapositive (~q → ~p):
Write it: ________________________________________________
Is it True? ________
Part IV: The Chain of Truth (Law of the Syllogism)
Use the Law of the Syllogism to connect two truths into a single new conclusion.
9.
The Water of Life:
Rule 1: If you follow the path, then you will reach the spring.
Rule 2: If you reach the spring, then your thirst will be quenched.
Conclusion: ________________________________________________
10.
Geometric Links:
Rule 1: If x = 5, then 2x = 10.
Rule 2: If 2x = 10, then 2x + 1 = 11.
Conclusion: ________________________________________________
Part V: Kingdom Modeling
11.
The Law of the Harvest:
"If a sower plants in the spring, then he will reap in the autumn."
1. Write the **Converse** of this rule.
2. Explain why the converse might be false in a drought or due to pests.
12.
The Apologetic Chain:
"If Christ is the Root, then the Fruit will be Agape."
Write the **Contrapositive** of this statement. What does this tell us about a life where there is no Agape? How does this protect the reputation of the Root?
13.
The Paradox of the Gifting:
"If you give generously, then you will have abundance."
1. Write the **Inverse** of this statement.
2. Is the Inverse always true? Can someone who doesn't give generously still have material abundance? (Explain your answer using Kingdom logic).
Part VI: The Echad Extension (Transmission)
14.
The Parental Logic:
Think of a rule in your household. Write it as an If/Then statement. Now, write its Contrapositive. Explain to your parents how the Contrapositive helps you understand the *purpose* of the rule. Write a summary of what they said.
Part VII: Logic and Reflection
15.
The Biconditional Sanctuary:
Rewrite this as a single "If and Only If" statement:
"If an angle is 90 degrees, then it is a right angle."
"If an angle is a right angle, then it is 90 degrees."
Biconditional: ________________________________________________
16.
Final Reflection:
Why does God want us to use "Reason" and "Logic" to defend our faith? Why is it not enough to just say, "I feel like it's true"? How does If/Then logic protect the Honor of the Father and the sanity of the believer?
"I vow to be a disciplined Lawyer for the King. I will test every chain of logic before I speak it, and I will honor the Contrapositive as the witness of a true heart. I will find my reason in the Father's Word."
[VOLUME 2 WORKBOOK SPEC: 14.1]
This workbook introduces formal symbolic logic (p, q, and negation) using geometric and biblical contexts. It focuses on the non-equivalence of the Converse/Inverse and the absolute equivalence of the Contrapositive.
